Overview
Combined operations are a chain of additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions in one expression. They are not always evaluated left to right; standard precedence applies, and this calculator handles it for you.
Formula
Example: a + b × c − d, where b × c is evaluated first, then a is added and d is subtracted.
How it works
Enter numbers and operations
Fill in four numbers and choose the operation between each pair.
Apply precedence
Exponents are evaluated first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
Read the result
The result appears with the full expression so you can check the inputs.
Worked examples
Example 1: 12 + 3 × 4 + 5
3 × 4 = 12, then 12 + 12 + 5 = 29.
Example 2: 20 ÷ 5 + 2
20 ÷ 5 = 4, then 4 + 2 = 6.
Frequently asked questions
Is the calculation left to right?
No. Multiplication and division take precedence over addition and subtraction. To change the order, use parentheses in the order of operations calculator.
Can I use exponents?
Yes. Choose the power (^) operation and it will be evaluated before multiplication and addition.
What if there is division by zero?
An error message appears because division by zero is undefined.
